Common Abortion FAQs
Did You Know?
- Nearly 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, so a positive pregnancy test doesn’t always mean you need an abortion. Ultrasounds are the only way to confirm a viable pregnancy. We offer referrals for viability ultrasounds to provide you with accurate information.
- The FDA approves the abortion pill only up to 10 weeks of gestation. To know if the abortion pill is an option for you, accurate dating of your pregnancy with an ultrasound is essential. To know if you're within the 10-week window, you need an ultrasound.
- Relying only on your last period date can lead to complications from excessive bleeding or failure of the medication. A viability ultrasound by qualified professionals is the most reliable way to date your pregnancy.
- There is up to a 2 percent chance of a pregnancy being implanted outside the uterus. Without an ultrasound to verify the correct location of the pregnancy, treatment with abortion medications could lead to severe bleeding. Always get an ultrasound before taking abortion pill medication.

If you're considering abortion, your first step is to schedule an appointment for a pregnancy test and request an ultrasound referral.
Before moving forward with an abortion, an ultrasound will determine:
-
Whether your pregnancy is progressing: This is crucial in deciding which abortion method you may be eligible for. The type of abortion and its cost depend on your health history and how far along your pregnancy is.
-
Whether your pregnancy is viable: The only way to confirm a viable pregnancy (one that is progressing) is through an ultrasound. Studies show that up to one in four pregnancies do not progress. Some women may not realize they’ve had a miscarriage until it’s detected in an ultrasound. If you’ve miscarried, you’ll need follow-up care from a doctor.

The cost of an abortion depends on the type of procedure and whether the abortion pill is an option based on how far along your pregnancy is. It can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Before making any abortion decision, it's important to know how far your pregnancy has progressed. We can help you confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound referral through Hope Center.
