For Men

So ...... you have been having sex, and your partner has missed her period.  How does that make you feel?  Are these thoughts running through your head:

What should I do?

What if she is pregnant?

What does that mean for me?

What influence will I have, if she is?

The first thing you need to do is establish that she actually has a positive pregnancy test and then determine your options. Hope Center of Livingston County provides confidential and free pregnancy testing and along with other support and referral services. We are here to help both of you come to an informed decision.  If a pregnancy is confirmed, there are actually 3 people to consider, not just yourself.  You are both parents and need to decide what is the best option for you.  We welcome you to come to the pregnancy test appointment with her.  If she truly is pregnant, then she may already feel overwhelmed by hormone changes that can greatly effect her emotions and thoughts. Having your support will reassure her that you care and strengthen her ability to make the best decision for you both.

There are things you can do that will positively affect your situation.  Things like listening, staying calm, honestly sharing your thoughts with her, getting all the facts about your options before making any decision will keep your partner from feeling alone and discourage her from making a knee-jerk reaction to your situation.

There are things you can avoid to prevent more stress and strain on both of you.  Walking away, ignoring the situation, or putting pressure on her may force results that neither of you want.

If she is indeed pregnant, Hope Center can provide support in a variety of ways.  We offer a men’s mentoring program and referrals to local organizations that can support you.  We will do all we can to help you help her through this pregnancy.

Remember the decision is ultimately hers, but your opinion matters, and you need to give voice to your thoughts without forcing her into a choice.

Men, regardless of your life situation, it's important that you take courage, stand up, and participate in your pregnant partner’s life. Your voice is likely the most important one to her right now.  She needs to know you can be counted on, and that you are willing to walk through this situation with her.
